About

our vision

DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is an entrepreneurship club in which business-oriented students participate in competitive events-- ranging from entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, management, technology, business administration and hospitality-- in attempt to achieve awards for their endeavors. DECA prepares leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in the real world, and helps students with business interactions and procedures to improve on their applicable skills rather than theory.

Competitions

The DECA Conferences can be attended at the regional (district), state, and national levels. The competitions consist of eight diverse main events:

  • Principles of Business Administration

    • Proficiency in Introductory-level principles for first year DECA students

  • Team Decision Making

    • Competency to analyze vital elements to effective business operation

  • Individual Series

    • Proficiency in knowledge of advanced principles of career pathways

  • Personal Financial Literacy

    • Adaptability to situation and analysis of critical thinking and creativity

  • Business Operations Research

    • Demonstration of knowledge in skills, strategic planning and research

  • Chapter Team Events

    • Demonstration of business-oriented skills and operations

  • Flagship Entrepreneur Events

    • Application of DECA’s most fundamental, underlying principle

  • Professional Selling and Consulting

    • Proficiency of integration of marketing operations

All events are subdivided into all the flagship components that make up the DECA entrepreneurial cluster: marketing, finance, business administration and administration, and hospitality and tourism. Furthermore, these groups are divided into Career Pathway events. Members choose from the three main events, which are set up in a two-pronged system. The first part of the competition requires you to complete an examination consisting of 100 questions. The Principles of Business Administration event uses the Business Administration Core exam, while the Team Decisions and Individual Series events use the Career Cluster exams. The second part of the competition can be one of two hands-on evaluations, depending on your event:

  • Role Plays

  • Case Studies

Competition Role Plays

Members competing in the Principles of Business Administration or the Individual Series or Personal Financial Literacy events will be evaluated by judges through role-play. For P.B.A., the member will be given 10 minutes to assess a business situation and prepare distinct tasks. After, the member will have 10 minutes to interact with a judge, who will evaluate the performance of the tasks. Finalists (based on evaluation scores) will undergo another role-play. For I.S. and P.F.L, the member will be given a scenario (i.e. human relations, economic development, communications, etc.) to assess in a 10 minute preparation time frame and develop a professional approach; this is followed by a 10 minute interaction period with a judge, who will evaluate their performance. The I.S. and P.F.L. events involves two preliminary role-plays, followed by a third role-play for finalists.

Competition Case Studies

Members competing in the Team Decision Making Event will be evaluated by a qualified business executive through a partnership case study. The team will be given a career-related business problem and half an hour of preparation time to study and analyze the situation, organize a plan, and will be given 15 minutes to present their approach to the situation before the judge and answer any posed questions.
